Professional Practice
Genetic counselling is a rapidly evolving, dynamic profession. There is a growing demand for genetic counsellors in clinical roles, as well as roles in management, education, laboratory, research and policy. Recent practice is an important way for genetic counsellors to maintain current professional competency in the quickly changing landscape of genetics and genomics.
Resumption of Practice provides a pathway by which a previously certified genetic counsellor can be supported to safely return to professional practice. This provides an appropriate balance between ensuring that practitioners have undertaken sufficient recent practice to maintain their knowledge and skills, and providing reasonable flexibility for situations such as part-time work, other employment, study leave and parenting leave.

Professional Practice Committee
The Professional Practice Committee reports to the HGSA Board of Censors for Genetic Counselling and assesses evidence of recency of practice. The Committee advises and supports genetic counsellors whose certification has lapsed due to lack of evidence of recent practice to resume safe practice.
