Registered Genetic Counsellor Definitions

 
  • MHGSA: Member of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. Allied health professionals who have completed a tertiary qualification in Genetic Counselling that is recognised by the HGSA for practice as a genetic counsellor.
  • FHGSA: Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. Allied health professionals who have completed additional requirements and been granted the higher credential of FHGSA Certification in Genetic Counselling.
Registration Status:
  • Registered Fellow - FHGSA: Certified for practice as a genetic counsellor with no restrictions and has achieved the higher credential of FHGSA. They are a current financial member of the HGSA.
  • Registered Fellow - FHGSA *: Certified for practice as a genetic counsellor and has achieved the higher credential of FHGSA. Currently participating in a resumption of practice plan to ensure the individual is receiving the supervision, continued professional development hours recommended for our genetic counsellors. They are a current financial member of the HGSA.
  • Registered Member - MHGSA #: Qualified for practice as a genetic counsellor with no restrictions. Actively working towards their FHGSA credential, and has made their first submission to the Board of Censors for Genetic Counselling. Currently completing additional supervision and/or continuing professional development requirements while working to achieve the FHGSA credential. They are a current financial member of the HGSA.
  • Registered Member - MHGSA: Qualified to practice as a genetic counsellor with no restrictions. They are a current financial member of the HGSA. 
  • Registered Non-Member: Qualified to practice as a genetic counsellor with no restrictions. They are not a current financial member of the HGSA. 
  • Lapsed: Failed to meet or submit the requirements for annual Registration. NOTE: This status will also apply to those who have met all requirements but have not paid their annual fee for the current registration period.
  • Expired: Failed to meet or submit the requirements for annual Registration for more than 3 years.
  • Suspended: Registration suspended for a defined period of time by the HGSA Professional Concerns and Complaints Committee or Appeal Panel.
  • Terminated: Registration has been terminated indefinitely the HGSA Professional Concerns and Complaints Committee or Appeal Panel.
  • Retired: Retired from practice. After 3 years as retired, will become expired.
